The Power of Positivity

24th March 2020

When is it positive to be positive? Believe it or not, positivity 'can' be used as a defense mechanism, to mask the denial of one's situation and feelings. In the same way that negative thoughts can be 'filtered' to be the main focus - causing low mood and hopelessness; they too can be avoided altogether, otherwise known as burying your head in the sand. Pretending that everything is "good" and "rosy" when it's not, won't make things better.

So, what additional considerations are needed to make a positive mindset an effective coping strategy?

- Honesty with oneself about your reality and how it impacts you

- Willingness to take personal responsibility

- Gratitude - having a sense of perspective

- Recognizing that your difficulties present opportunity for growth

- Acceptance of things you can and cannot control

- Letting go of resentments

- Understanding need of multiple coping strategies

- Faith that things WILL get better

- Valuing and trusting the perspectives offered by others

- Belief that positive change is possible

Having help to nurture a growth mindset instead of a fixed and rigid one is essential to overcoming hopelessness and becoming more positive about your present situation and future. Contact me if you'd like to talk.
