Sustainable Farming Incentive pilot scheme to launch…

17th March 2021

Agriculture farmers can now apply to take part in the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) pilot scheme.

The scheme is expected to be rolled out from October with expressions of interest closing 11 April.

The SFI will support approaches to farming, including improvement to soil health, hedgerows and integrated pest management.

For example, under the scheme, a farmer may be paid to manage and plant hedgerows to provide year-round food, shelter and breeding cover for birds and insects.

The scheme’s main objective is to support the environment and promote animal welfare in local areas throughout the UK.

MAF’s Director of Agriculture & Renewables, Rachel Borlace commented on the scheme, saying:

“Both sustainable farming and carbon savings are very much on the agenda for our UK farmers. This scheme will focus on both the environmental stance and value adding, which is so important in the supply chain.”
